Safe Toys & Gifts Awareness Month

Did you know that December is recognized as Safe Toys & Gifts Awareness Month? Prevent Blindness America declared this month to bring consideration and thought to gift giving during the holiday season.

The hope of this awareness month is that we all would ensure the gifts we are giving appropriately suit the age and abilities of the one receiving it, especially for infants and children under the age of three.

According to The Emergency Center, the most common types of injuries that occur as a result of children’s’ use of toys include choking, falls, eye injuries, drowning, and motor accidents.

Consider the following, from the Department of Health & Human Services:

  • Approximately 217,000 children are treated in emergency rooms each year for toy-related injuries, either because of the toy itself or due to its mishandling.
  • An estimated 11,000 toy-related eye injuries occur each year in children, with the majority coming from BB guns and other weapon-related toys.
  • Most toy-related injuries, nearly 72%, involve children under the age of 15.

At I’m Safe!, we believe that awareness is among the most critical elements to helping prevent injuries. Knowledge is power and ensuring that people in our communities understand the importance of toy & gift safety this holiday season is one of our top priorities.
