NEWS

Celebrating Child Passenger Safety Technicians ...  National CPST Month is coming in May! The observance, sponsored by Safe Kids Worldwide, recognizes the 41,000 certified CPS Technicians and 1,700 Instructors who are currently serving their communities. Safe Kids recently published a report, 2017 Certification Program Accomplishments, which includes statistics by state.

May is for Bicycle Awareness ...  May offers Bicycle Safety Month (NHTSA), National Bike Month (League of American Bicyclists), and Bike-to-School Day (May 9th). All provide  opportunities to promote correct helmet use, visibility, safe riding and road-sharing. In support of safer bicycling, I'm Safe! is offering 15% off our super bright bicycle safety lights until 4/30.

Can proactive parents make prom safer? ... With the excitement and pressures surrounding prom, the distraction of cell phones, and the lure of alcohol, it's no wonder parents are concerned about prom night. Power to the Parent has created brochures for parents (English and Spanish) with tips to keep their teens safe.

Get teens' attention with I'm Safe! products that feature your prom messaging. See prom-related banners, posters and pledge cards here.

New data confirms ATVs are dangerous to children ...  Preliminary data released by the Consumer Product Safety Commission reveals that in 2016 at least 53 children lost their lives due to ATVs and another 26,800 were injured seriously enough to require medical treatment. Read more here.

Three children lost to heatstroke so far in 2018 ...  KidsAndCars reports that 43 children were lost to heatstroke in 2017, with three additional deaths this year. To raise awareness before temperatures rise, the organization is sponsoring National Heatstroke Awareness Day on April 11.  To help keep Heatstroke Prevention top-of-mind, consider using I'm Safe! pledge cards, fans or other heatstroke awareness materials.

Drowning is the second leading cause of death for ages 5-24 ... On average, nine people die from drowning each day in the U.S., according to the National Safety Council's Injury Facts 2017. For children, drowning is "mostly due to children falling into a pool or being left alone in a bathtub." But statistics also point to drowning as a concern for teens and young adults. Get a head start on preventing drownings with I'm Safe! Water Safety Clings and print products — 15% off this month.

Support a "vision" requirement for Autonomous Vehicles ...  Last month, a pedestrian was killed by a self-driving vehicle while walking her bike across the street. The League of American Bicyclists is encouraging advocates to contact their Senators in support of requiring AVs to "prove their ability to recognize and respond to people biking and walking in our streets." Read more here.
Car insurance may increase for those who text and drive ...  A technology unit within Allstate, Arity, is tracking in-car cell phone use so insurance companies can either punish or reward drivers based on how they use their phones while driving. Read more here.
