Hello $[FNAME|Customer|Guest]$,

Kids are back in school; CPS Week is happening; and Walk to School Day events occur in less than two weeks. We hope these events go spectacularly for everyone. Since October is Walk to School Month, if you need any last-minute materials for events taking place later in the month, please call us today to see what is available.

I don't know about you, but I'm not quite ready for pumpkin spice lattes, fall foliage or assorted gourds decorating my home. I do love planning for Halloween, though.

Next month is also Teen Driver and School Bus Safety Weeks. With all of these events (and more!) in mind, we've got some ghost-busting and myth-busting materials on sale this month.

So.... "Who Ya Gonna Call?"

-Jamie, Wendy, and the Ghostbusters I'm Safe Team.

Walking and bicycling news ...

The Safe Routes to School National Conference is being held in Tampa, Florida, November 12-14. You can learn more about the conference and also register by following this link.

Safe Spots for Students ...To help protect children from crimes as they walk to and from school, the businesses, churches and nonprofits in Ward 8 of  Washington, D.C., are opening their doors to students who feel unsafe. They have posted signs announcing that they are "Safe Spots for Students," and will offer a refuge and an opportunity to call for help.  Read more here.

Some protected bike lanes are safer than others ... A new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that "One way protected bike lanes differed little from major roads in terms of injury risk."  Some leaders in the bicycle safety world are questioning whether the right conclusions are being drawn from that statement and argue that the designs should be better.

The worst offenders in school zones are... parents. According to this survey that was taken in British Columbia, 4 out of 5 drivers had witnessed speeding and over half (56%) of the respondents had witnessed a child nearly being struck at least once within the first few weeks of school.

Stories like this are one of the reasons we created our No Phones in School Zones line. Call or email for an estimate.

No matter what your mother told you, don't wash chicken before you cook it... Cautionary tales of foodborne illness continue to find their way into the news as salmonella, e coli, Hepatitis A and other viruses are making their way onto our dinner plates.

When you try to wash raw chicken, the end result is usually a bunch of bacteria hanging out in your sink and on the foods that aren't being heated to temperatures high enough to kill germs. The CDC has put out a great, easy-to-understand visual to explain how that works.

Victims of bullying are three times more likely to attempt suicide ... A study of more than 130,000 adolescents in 48 countries revealed that bullying victimization increases the risk of suicide attempts. The results were reported in "Trauma begets trauma ...," an article published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.  Recognizing the risks and warning signs of potential suicide can go a long way toward helping those in crisis.

October is Bullying Prevention Month. If you want to help raise awareness in your community, consider reaching students with bullying-prevention materials from I'm Safe.

Pennsylvania set up a state-wide safety tip line to help with school violence... and discovered that students and faculty were far more likely to report bullying, self-harm, suicidal ideation, and other mental health concerns than physical threats or harassment.

While not the intention of the program, administrators believe that it has helped demonstrate the reality of the state of youth mental health.

Vaping-induced lung damage has led to seven deaths ... and at least 530  lung injuries. Many of the patients are young, with more than half younger than age 25. Three out of four of the patients are men. Read more here. At least 13 states have statewide bans on e-cigarettes and many, including the federal government, are working to ban flavored e-cigarettes.

Head Start programs should receive Federal Work-Study funding... that's the basis of a bipartisan piece of legislation introduced for consideration. The Higher Education Act of 1965 doesn't currently count jobs in early childhood education under their eligibility for the student program. Let's help our college students who want to help in Head Start centers.
