Help Parents Be Aware of Inhalant Abuse and How Talking to Their Kids Can Help

You Can Make A Difference! This pledge card provides guidance for parents on the risks of inhalant abuse – something that most families don’t even think of, let alone discuss with their young children.

Inhalants are often household products such as whipped cream cans, lighters, glue, gasoline and canned air. Because young children may be fooled into believing that they are not harmful, it is important that parents talk to them about the dangers sooner rather than later. But first, the parents need to know that it exists as a practice!

The information portion of the card highlights several subject areas:

• Thoughts that a parent may have surrounding inhalant abuse
• The urgency of the having the discussion with their child
• A simple way to bring up the subject with a child
• Facts that share the very real dangers that inhalants present as well as how shockingly common it is for kids to try.

The pledge card portion asks the parent to Take the Pledge saying, “I will reduce my child’s risk of using dangerous inhalants by talking with them.” By signing, the adult commits to “Keeping my child and loved ones safe and informed about inhalants”, not abusing “Inhalants of any kind”, and talking to “My child about the dangers of inhalants”.
