Concussions In Youth Sports

Did you know that there are more than 5.3 million individuals in the United States who are living with a permanent brain injury-related disability? That’s one in every 60 people! As we continue to recognize Brain Injury Awareness Month, we want to talk a little today about concussions in youth sports.

According to the National Council of Youth Sports, 60 million children and teens in the United States participate in organized sports each year! Of those 60 million, it is estimated that between 1.6 and 3.8 million athletes will suffer a concussion in any given year.

The National Safety Council shares the following statistics on concussions and youth sports:

  • 10% of all contact-sport athletes sustain concussions annually.
  • Head injuries are more prevalent in baseball than injuries to any other body part.
  • 5% of all soccer players sustain brain injuries.
  • An athlete who sustains a concussion is 4 to 6 times more likely to sustain another one.
