Fire Prevention Week

Did you know that Fire Prevention Week is the longest-running public health observance in our country? While the NFPA has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week since 1922, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed it a national observance in 1925.

This year, the theme of Fire Prevention Week is “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape.” It’s a terrific opportunity to educate families in your community about the simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from home fires. You can encourage parents and children to keep themselves safer from fire with a "Family Escape Plan."  This engaging activity page includes information needed for families to work together to make and practice a plan, along with prompts for parents to install and check smoke alarms. 

The State of Massachusetts’ Department of Fire Services notes that today’s homes burn much faster than they did decades ago. Today, you could have two minutes or less to safely escape a fire at home after the smoke alarm sounds. The NFPA has also created social media cards and posts to highlight home fire safety, as well as easy to read safety tip sheets to support your efforts.

During this week, children, adults, and teachers learn how to stay safe in case of a fire and I’m Safe! can help provide additional resources that are always customizable. This is also a great time to be thinking about the holiday season, such as home safety prior to Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year!
