Gearing Up For Brain Injury Awareness Month

According to Concussion.org, between 1.6 and 3.6 million recreational and sports-related concussions occur in the United States each year. On top of that, 90% of sports-related concussions take place without loss of consciousness and 40% of athletes return to play before they should.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention defines a concussion as a mild traumatic brain injury that is caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. As we approach Brain Injury Awareness Month in March, we want to help public health advocates spread the message about concussion prevention, symptoms, and more.

The Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) goes on to note that brain injury is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States with several startling statistics in the recent years.

  • 47.9% of brain injury occur as the result of a fall.
  • 17.1% are the result of being struck by or against something.
  • 13.2% occur in motor vehicle accidents.
  • 8.3% of concussions are from assaults.
