Get Ready For National Park & Recreation Month

Celebrated during July each year, Park and Recreation Month serves as an opportunity for people to rediscover outdoor spaces and the benefits of staying fit and active. Let’s keep it going all year round! The following facts and statistics help to explain why this day is so important:

  • Obesity rates in the United States have increased dramatically over the past two decades.
  • 1 in 3 American adults have high blood pressure, which often comes without any warning signs.
  • Heart disease is a leading cause of death, accounting for 600,000 deaths annually.
  • Each year, Americans spend approximately $110 billion at fast food restaurants.

Local parks and recreation organizations play an important role in the wellness of their community members. In fact, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) indicates that: children who live in greener environments weigh less than children who live in less green areas, studies show that nature relieves stress and improves mental health, and nearly 3 in 5 adults claim that access to outdoor spaces is essential to their mental and physical health.

The Center for Family Medicine notes that encouraging healthy behaviors in family members of all ages helps to increase quality of life and strengthen bonds. They also share activities for families to do together to celebrate  Family Health and Fitness Day, which can be enjoyed all summer long – taking an afternoon walk, going for a swim, playing at the park, enjoying backyard games, and having an indoor dance party!
