Here’s an alarming statistic regarding home safety… 40 years ago, you had an average of 15-17 minutes to escape a house fire. Now, you have an average of 2-3 minutes before the house is engulfed. While danger seems to be rising all around us, we can work together to focus on being more prepared.

Like many things, home safety begins with awareness, and these are just a few questions to help you start thinking about your home or vacation property through a different lens. By asking questions, we understand we can identify and reduce hazard risks in your home for both children and adults.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission identifies the following as areas of particular concern for safety in the home: fire safety, pool safety, safe sleep, poison prevention, and window cords. While this is a strong list to begin with, these are just a few of the areas that should be considered.

SafeHome.org goes further to provide some shocking statistics on home hazards:

• Over 2 million poisoning incidents were reported to poison control centers nationwide in 2018.
• Every year, more than 2,200 children die from injuries that happen at home.
• 1 in every 5 adults who fall at home sustain a broken bone, head injury, or other serious injury.
• Over 5,000 choking incidents occurred in 2015 that lead to accidental deaths in the U.S.
• Fires that occurred at home caused 75% of fire deaths and 73% of fire injuries.
