National Baby Safety Month

September is Baby Safety Month and we want to make sure you’re equipped with the information and products you need to help raise awareness and better protect the children in our communities. Baby Safety Month was introduced in 1983 by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association and provides parents and organizations with a chance to brush up on baby-proofing safety standards and tips.

According to SafeHome.org, their 2022 Annual Childproofing Report found that 4 in 10 parents say an injury could’ve been avoided with proper childproofing. Furthermore, toilet lid locks were deemed the most overlooked safety device (54%), despite the fact that drowning is the number one cause of injury-related death in children aged 1 to 4.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention highlights the fact that child unintentional injury death rates in 2019 were highest among babies under 1 year old, with suffocation death rates increasing 20% among infants. How can we help people not become a statistic? Here are some quick baby safety tips:

  • Check to make sure your car seat is installed correctly. See our free CPS memes!
  • Install a working smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm on every level of your home.
  • Keep babies strapped in when using highchairs, carriers, swings, and strollers.
  • Keep cleaning products, medicines, and small objects up, away, and out of reach of infants.
  • Place babies on their backs for naps and at night until they are 1 year old.
  • Set your water heater to 120° F to avoid burns.

I’m Safe! also offers Baby Safety products, such as the Choke Tube Tester, which is a reusable 123 Regulation compliant choking hazard device. Place the object in question inside the cylinder and if it fits entirely, it may pose a choking hazard to children under 3 years of age. We also have a Keeping Your Baby Safe Refrigerator Magnet, or a Bathtub Safety Vinyl Cling. Thank you for your support in helping those around us live more safe and happy lives – starting as young as babies!
