New Year's Eve Safety Tips

New Year’s Eve is one of the most celebrated nights of the year. And of course, that’s no surprise, as it provides an opportunity to reflect on what was and celebrate what’s to come. However, it’s also a night that has come to be regarded as one of the most dangerous night on the road of the year, due to the high volume of traffic and increased number of impaired drivers.

In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, on average, 36 people are killed each day in crashes involving alcohol, on New Year’s that number rises to 54.

AAA notes that more pedestrians are killed on New Year’s than any other day of the year. Further illustrating that point, the National Safety Council estimates that 408 people may die on U.S. roads this New Year’s Day holiday period (December 30th through January 2nd).

With that in mind, here are some tips to help you plan ahead for this New Year’s Eve:

  • Plan a ride in advance, whether that be public transportation, a ridesharing service, or carpooling with friends. Know what your options are and prepare accordingly.
  • Plan for guests’ safety and how they will get home, especially if you’re hosting a party.
  • Be cautious with fireworks, which frequently make “celebratory” appearances on NYE.
  • Avoid leaving your car overnight. It is the most active holiday for car thefts!
  • Set a reasonable curfew with kids. If they’re old enough to drive, be sure they understand the dangers of driving on the holiday. Encourage them to stay in one location.
