Stay Safe In The Sun This Summer

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the summer solstice occurs when the sun travels along its northernmost path in the sky. That means this year, Wednesday, June 21st, kicks off summer! While the  summer season brings long days at the beach, road trips, and gatherings of all kinds with family and friends, the hot weather also brings an increased risk of heat-related illnesses.

Statistics published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that:

  • An average of 702 heat-related deaths occur each year.
  • There are an average of 67,512 emergency department visits due to heat each year.
  • An average of 9,235 people are hospitalized each year due to heat.

Studies also show the most vulnerable population are children, who are limited in their ability to protect themselves from the heat as a child’s body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult’s. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 940 children of died of heatstroke because they were left or became trapped in a hot car over the past 25 years.
