Think Safety This Summer

For so many of us, warmer weather means more outdoor fun: swimming, bike riding, hiking, barbecues with friends and family . . . and yet the Emergency Department at the Children’s Hospital of Colorado calls the summer season “trauma season.”  During one three-year period, Safe Kids Worldwide found that 60% of unintentional injury-related deaths to children occurred from May to August.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), unintentional injury is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-14 in the United States. Swimming is one of the most popular summertime activities, but it also poses some of the highest risks. The CDC reports that about 10 people die from unintentional drowning every day, and 1 in 5 of those deaths are children age 14 and younger.

What can be done? We need to continue raising awareness of ways to prevent injuries to children, and finding ways to make safety fun. We can participate in car seat checks, bicycle and water safety rodeos, and health fairs, or perhaps offer a safety contest.

And don’t forget these fun and engaging resources:

The I’m Safe! Summer Safety Adventure Book is a great customizable resource that includes a bit of everything to help with summer safety.

The I’m Safe! in The Water Mini Activity Book helps children stay safe around open water and pools.

Consider the I’m Safe! Walk n’ Roll Safe To The Extreme Activity Book to help pre-teens take advantage of safety tools and use problem-solving to make safter decisions.

Finally, help encourage bike safety when venturing out on two wheels this summer. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, bicyclists accounted for 2.1% of all traffic deaths and 2.2% of all crash-related injuries in 2018. We want to encourage wearing a helmet and making sure a bike is in proper working condition before heading out on a ride, as well as following traffic laws and staying visible by wearing bright or reflective clothing – consider I’m Safe! Reflective Products.

Overall, increased outdoor fun comes with increased risk of injury, meaning it’s important to be aware of the potential dangers that come with summer activities and how to take steps to stay safe while having fun. From Bike Safety and Pedestrian Safety to Sports + Recreation Safety and Water Safety, I’m Safe! has an array of products to help with Summer Safety education – and now is a great time to plan ahead.
