Why We Love Bicycle Helmets!

While many of us focus year-round on Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety, we specifically want to draw your attention to National Bicycle Safety Month in May.

As the popularity of bicycling for commuting, exercise, and recreation continues to grow, the number of injuries and fatalities continue to grow as well. In fact, the National Safety Council notes that nearly 80,000 cycling-related head injuries are treated in emergency rooms each year, with the majority of those being traumatic brain injuries.

Research from the National Institutes of Health shows that wearing a helmet reduces the chances of head injury by 48%, serious head injury by 60%, and traumatic brain injury by 53%.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration goes on to share that 938 bicyclists were killed in traffic crashes in 2020. These statistics help emphasize that the single most effective safety device available to reduce head injury and death from bicycle crashes is a helmet. There’s a reason so many say, “Use your head, wear a helmet.” For more on recent studies, please follow this link to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute.

In an era when children and adults may be misled by misinformation, I’m Safe! has made it a priority to provide you with research-based, safety-oriented educational materials that can easily be adapted to meet a variety of regional, community, and outreach needs. As we head into National Bicycle Safety Month, we want to highlight a few of our Bicycle Safety products that can aid in promoting the benefits of correct helmet fit, use, and overall bicycle safety.
