Fire safety: Reaching the “hard-to-reach” with smoke alarms … Arizona firefighters partnered with visiting nurses to help prevent residential fires in Maricopa County. Initially, 55% of the low-income families had no working smoke alarm and 92% had no CO alarm. By the end of the visits, everyone had both. Read more here.

Teen crash risk is highest during the first three months of independent driving ... The NIH released news of a new study on teen drivers before and after they get their driver's licenses. Results showed that during the first three months of licensure, teens are eight times more likely to be in a collision or close call and four times more likely to engage in risky driving behaviors. NHTSA’s 2018 National Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign will be in effect from August 15th through Labor Day Weekend, ending September 3rd. Their enforcement materials are available here:

Safe Sleep: About 3,500 infants are still lost each year to sleep-related deaths, according to a report released earlier this year by the CDC. SIDS Awareness Month in October provides an opportunity to educate new parents about placing infants to sleep on their backs, “room sharing but not bed sharing, and keeping soft objects and loose bedding out of the infant’s sleep environment.” For a customized Safe Sleep tip sheet, click here.
