June 2018 Newsletter

Traumatic Brain Injury, Summer Safety Resources, How to Get a Complimentary Banner Display, and More

Thank you to everyone who responded to last month’s survey!

We sent an email describing the most effective ways colleagues have found to draw people to their events. Advertising (flyers, social media, WIC clinics) was at the top of the list, along with food. If you would like a recap, please send me an email and I'll forward the results to you.

Please don’t let a less than ideal budget get you down – we offer high quality products for surprisingly low cost. And this month, we are giving away one complimentary standup or tabletop banner with every order over $1,000 (not including shipping costs) – a $300 value.

In this month’s newsletter, we highlight a new report on Traumatic Brain Injury, School Bus Safety news, the results of our CPS Facebook Poll, Summer Safety Tips, recalls and more.

We're here for your success,

--Wendy and the I'm Safe! Team

NEWS

New report finds a lack of consistency in follow-up care after Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) ...  Patients discharged following a TBI may have long-lasting physical and cognitive symptoms. A new study in JAMA Network Open found that among 279 patients with moderate to severe symptoms, "41 percent had not had a follow-up visit at three months" and approximately half were discharged without TBI educational materials. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is now recommending lap/shoulder belts on all large school buses  ...  Additional recommendations include more in-depth oversight of drivers' health and licensure histories as well as asking that NHTSA “require all new school buses to be equipped with collision avoidance systems and automatic emergency braking technologies.” Read more here.

Results from our Facebook Child Passenger Safety Polls ... You may be interested in recent CPS polls we conducted on Facebook. In one, 71% of people felt comfortable and confident with the job they did installing a car seat for their child, but in another, only 32% were confident when a family member or friend installed the car seat instead. If you want to order a customizable product that could be used as a CPS handout for grandparents or other family members, please let us know.

Tethers continue to be a challenge for parents according to Safe Kids Worldwide. In the May/June CPS Express, they note the 2017 study which found that of the 36 percent of parents who used the tether, only half used it correctly. Read more here.

Every day this year, about 11 people will die from unintentional drownings in the US alone. That’s according to the CDC. The statistic includes the almost one person per day who dies in a boating-related incident, approximately 20% of whom are age 14 and younger. The World Health Organization also points out that, in addition to loss of life and the emotional costs associated with these events, coastal drowning costs the US $273 million annually. Read more here.

Fireworks safety reminders ... From bottle rockets to sparklers and firecrackers, the National Safety Council has put together a useful resource about the different types of fireworks and the hazards they pose. Read more here.

Two ongoing recalls with potentially fatal consequences ...  The TAKATA airbag recall is still ongoing and these airbags are expected to continue causing problems for drivers and passengers. The Kidde dual-sensor smoke alarms (models PI2010 and PI9010) were also recalled due to an inability to consistently detect smoke.
