Reducing risks to child pedestrians ...  Pedestrian fatalities are higher than they have been for the past 33 years according to GHSA. The National Center for Safe Routes to School and Safe Kids Worldwide recently provided an overview of pedestrian-related fatalities among children and described what they are doing to reduce risks, including the Vision Zero for Youth Initiative. Backup cameras are now required for all new vehicles  ...  As of May 2018, all new cars, buses and trucks weighing less than 10,000 pounds are required to include a backup camera. The technology is expected to reduce the estimated 210 fatalities and 15,000 injuries sustained each year in backover crashes. Read more here.

See something, say something ... The National Threat Assessment Center examined twenty-eight 2017 public attacks in which three or more people were harmed. Their findings strongly indicate that for now, one of the best approaches to stopping this type of attack is through suspicious activity reporting and follow-up by law enforcement. More than 75% of the 28 attackers made threatening or concerning communications prior to the attack. Read more here.  
 

 
Shaping the future of autonomous vehicles ... The latest advances in safe self-driving vehicles, including the human-machine interface and crash avoidance, are among the topics that will be addressed at the Automated Driving Systems Conference in Washington, DC, June 19-20.  Read more here.

 

Upcoming safety event resources ...  May to July offer solid opportunities to put distracted and impaired driving as well as emergency preparedness in front of the public eye.  Click It or Ticket enforcement runs from 5/14 to 6/3. National Safety Month features different safety topics each week in June. NHTSA is promoting their "Drive Sober" campaign for the July 4th holiday. Safe cities and safe public spaces for women ... UN Women is promoting their global, flagship initiative, "Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces" through champion cities including Cairo, New Delhi, Brussels and New York. The reality of unwanted sexual remarks and touching, to rape and femicide, reduces freedom of movement for women and their participation in public life and recreation. Read more here. 
 

 
2018 U.S. Opioid Epidemic Resource Pack ... Drug overdose is a leading cause of accidental death, with an average of 115 Americans dying each day from opioid misuse. The Global Health Education and Learning Incubator at Harvard University has compiled a resource pack that focuses on vulnerable populations as well as "the complicated ways the current opioid crisis intersects with the private sector and criminal justice policy." National Survey on Distracted Driving Attitudes and Behavior ...  In March, NHTSA released the results of the most recent telephone survey "to assess attitudes and self-reported behaviors related to distracted driving, cell phone use, and texting." Approximately four out of ten drivers reported answering their cell phones while driving at least some of the time. Read more here.

Do people ever ask you how to clean their car seats? ... Safe Ride News offers "Car Seat Cleaning Basics" in their 2018 January/February newsletter. They cite a U.K. study that found, on average, that "every square centimeter of a car seat contained at least 100 bacteria and fungi - twice as many as on a toilet seat." Read more here.
